I was fired.
You are my therapist. I am sorry. It wont take an hour.
I dont want to talk about what happened; only that it was entirely my fault. It was not a loss of temper, anything criminal, or misconduct. It was worse. It was incompetence. It was my fault. It was my fault. It was my fault. There is no one else responsible.
You have to have broad shoulders thats what my parents always told me. Its that puritan work ethic they ground into me, the pilgrim spirit, distilled capitalism, original sin. Zeus didnt condemn Atlas to bear the weight of Ouranos. Atlas condemned himself.
My grandfathers are titans, their shoulders bearing the weight of families, fortune, failure. By example, they charged me with a horrific duty: That I should judge my own actions more harshly than any invisible Creator ever could, and that my soul is a balance of my actions.
I dragged that old family charge across the pavement behind me as I walked out of my office Wednesday for the last time. With every step taken since, Ive pulled that harness of hereditary self-loathing and Quaker guilt. No one else is responsible for my sudden unemployment not my boss, not the uncaring chaos of the universe, not a lack of sleep, not my college professors or my childhood or my spiritual deadness.
It was my fault.
Hot-shot kid. Pretty god-damned bright, excuse the conceit. Bored in classes, great grades with no effort. Expected the world to open the doors of its holiest chambers to me. Like every white-bread mother, mine fed me the you can do anything line. I believed her, and why not?
The mirror is darker now. Not so god-damned bright, forgive the self-flagellation. Unemployed, a career path probably unrecoverable. I dont expect to even find the doors to the holy chambers, let alone have them thrust open to me. My wife tells me she trusts me to find a new job, but theres no you can do anything promise.
I was so cocky about what I could do. Oh the places youll go, right? I knew who I was and what I wanted and what it would take to get there. I made all the right moves. Except the last one.
Now my insides are panic-fueled clockwork. The cogs are spinning faster every second. I cant sit still. I cant stop thinking about how it all happened. I cant watch television or laugh. I suddenly crave discomfort. I feel I deserve a little pain.
Instead of politics and economics and philosophy all those bullshit things I loved to ponder before my mind for the past three days has been stuck, resetting every few seconds to an oily dread. How far will my savings stretch? Will I lose my house? Can I keep my wifes respect? Will the market rebound? Does anybody want me? What would it be like to be homeless?
Theres a rational voice in the dark tunnels of my mind, screaming in a whisper that it probably wont come to the worst. Its terrified, though. It is bellowing a mantra: Jason, you will stock shelves if you have to. You will wear an apron and make french fries. Your pride is gone. You will answer telephones. You will clean floors.
An English degree is pretty much useless. Moll Flanders and Ethan Frome wont help me now.
But Im rambling. Its hard to avoid when that one thought keeps bouncing off the inside of my skull and crashing into all the productive thoughts in there: I am unemployed because I messed up. Thats the sentence that is keeping me from sleeping more than a couple of clutched hours at a time. Its the sentence that stops me from eating even though my stomach is burning. My pacing is set to the cadence of that sentence. A little after midnight for the past couple of days, sitting where no one could hear, I timed my sobs to that rhythm. I hadnt cried in six years.
Maybe Im being a baby. I think I am. But I never expected to fail. Being a failure is hard work, and the pay is terrible.

SparkFuns latest tutorial shows you how to work with relays. A relay is an electrically operated switch. In this case, theyre using it to switch a 120V AC outlet. The article carries the standard warnings about how not to kill yourself with AC (plus some non sequitor linking throughout). As an extra precaution, they chose a GFI outlet. You probably know how a relay works, but its worth seeing how they implemented it. They use a transistor to prevent overloading the microcontrollers GPIO pin. The control pin is pulled to ground to keep the relay off. A diode is placed across the relay coil to manage the power flow when it discharges. An indicator LED is included to show when the relay closes. This is a great foundation for an automation project, or maybe you just want to terrorize your cat.

My Neighbor Totoro is that rare delight, a family film that appeals to children and adults alike. While their mother is in the hospital, 10-year-old Satsuki and 4-year-old Mei move into an old-fashioned house in the country with their professor father. At the foot of an enormous camphor tree, Mei discovers the nest of King Totoro, a giant forest spirit who resembles an enormous bunny rabbit. Mei and Satsuki learn that Totoro makes the trees grow, and when he flies over the countryside or roars in his thunderous voice, the winds blow. Totoro becomes the protector of the two sisters, watching over them when they wait for their father, and carrying them over the forests on an enchanted journey. When the children worry about their mother, Totoro sends them to visit her via a Catbus, a magical, multilegged creature with a grin the Cheshire Cat might envy. Unlike many cartoon children, Satsuki and Mei are neither smart-alecky nor cloyingly saccharine. They are credible kids: bright, energetic, silly, helpful, and occasionally impatient. Filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki makes the viewer believe the two sisters love each other in a way no American feature has ever achieved. My Neighbor Totoro is enormously popular in Japan, and some of the character merchandise has begun to appear in America. The film has also inspired a Japanese environmental group to buy a Totoro Forest preserve in the Saitama Prefecture, where Miyazaki's film is set. --Charles Solomon

After the controversial ending to this years season at the Brazilian Grand Prix, Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone proposed a radical change to the scoring system. Instead of the ranking system in place now, where the top 8 finishers all get points (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1), Ecclestone wants an Olympic-style gold/silver/bronze medal system where only the top 3 finishers score. That would focus the season more on the person who wins the most races, as opposed to the person who consistently finishes in the top places. It would probably also take the finesse and strategy out of the sport and destroy any incentives the smaller teams have.
The Formula One chief said he came up with the idea after McLarens Lewis Hamilton clinched this years championship by finishing fifth in the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix. Hamilton beat Felipe Massa by a single point this year, but under Ecclestones new system, the Brazilian would have won the title with six wins against Hamiltons five.

My musical style is mainly influenced by the french house, from 90s stardust and crydamoure productions, to fred falke recent tunes. Basically Id like my music to be smooth and groovy, something danceable but listenable in the car as well. I like to sample a lot, I am a music collector, I love almost any kind of musical genre and I think many obscure records should have a second life and a second chance. I like also to include some movie samples sometimes; in my daylife i am a cinemagoer and Filmology student; Id like my tracks to have some kind of visual/cinematic aspect you know.
In general, I try to do some kind of work on the samples I use by adding some melodies or some basses. I am not so good in composing melodies and using synths. At the same time I dont want to do some cut and paste work. I dont like producers that cut, sample and sequence without any creative work on that. Even though I probably have done it also sometimes. My music is quite easy and gentle and its all about the bass, there is not too much to say.

This is one of those news items that we lost track of, and honestly it may be too late to score one of these, but it merits a post nonetheless. Wunderland War just dropped their White Tiger Gang Crazy 88 figure (limited to 192 pieces) . Yes, it’s pretty dope – love the pose and the short samurai sword. This is a variation on the original and I’ll say classic Monkey Assassin toy.
But beyond the figure the really interesting part is the price. 1 Cent ( + S/H). Vinnie decided in the light of the global financial crisis that has people panicked and feeling like they can’t afford anything, he would give away this figure. It’s his way of giving back to those that have supported him and his work in the past, and are simply too strapped to purchase another toy. He also found inspiration in Banksy’s piece “ The Joy of Not Being Sold Anything”. Very cool sentiment plus the figure is pretty sweet. Finally – Kill Bill is still an awesome movie.

You seem perfectly able and willing to go between observer and creator. I think that balance is fairly unique. How has that influenced your work?
I started with observing, since photography was my first passion. I assume that with time I developed an interaction between imagery and the design process. My work was always about one subject, one character that I tended to approach through different means. The balance is an attempt to avoid definition and to create a sense of perspective. I will never reach my goal, that is a given. I am just pretending, trying for something like utopia.
Many of your photos show people engaged in an activity, from surfing to rock concerts. Is that the definition of a cult? Can anything be a cult?
It is always about ritual and cult, you are totally right. This has always been, including my fashion shows and collections, without exception. I am consistently interested in the representation of the sacred, the making of signs and conventions, and the repetition of actions and devotions. Live performance is, of course, an obvious transposition of liturgy, and I guess any movement in street and youth culture has created a strict and formal code which was meant to define and transcend a distinctive group.
How do you think people expressed rebellion before rock?
Rock music pretty much catalyzed rebellion in the mid-50s and the understanding that there was some kind of time capsule between childhood and adulthood, which was challenging and explosive, to say the least. Besides, we can still go back to the 18th Century, to the court of Versailles, and figure out that music and new sounds were always the sign of some sort of rebellion. When Marie Antoinette imported [Christoph Willibald] Gluck to wake up the dance floor in the dusty Galerie des Glaces and displayed her elaborate hairstyle, she was being a rebellious teenager.
What does the future hold for rock? Will it last forever? Should it?
In a certain way, rock is an academic pursuit like any other. It is an extremely conventional culture, a pure tradition, and this is precisely why it will always be around and survive new genres. In this way, it is totally reassuring, which could mean it will always become cooler and more iconic. Besides, there have been no ways around it for the past fifty years. It will keep coming back, but never quite the same, reinforcing a legendary tradition.
Do you wish fashion had the kind of obsessive fans music has?
It has already. The Internet helped create an appeal for fashion and a fan culture that goes beyond knowledgeable. These fans have a true passion for details.
Have you ever wished you were a rock star in music, the way you were a rock star in fashion, and hopefully will be again?
Not at all. I always thought I stood behind a screen, sometimes a lens. I rarely felt exposed. It is not my nature, I assume, to stay "outside." Whatever happened was against my will.

I like to keep my Fridays in NYC low key. No club thumping anthems in the background, no lines, no overcrowded restaurants, no tourists in midtown cutting me off for a photo op, just real easy, yah know?
I got put on to this place Monkeytown in Williamsburg by my friend Brian and his bi-weekly list. All i read was "Daft Punk.....movie premiere......robots.....Williamsburg...
I fell into the space right away. A room with huge screens on each wall and huge white couches underneath each screen. In front of you are low wooden tables where you can have dinner from the menu (which smelt fantastic- and from what I read their stuff is extremely experimental) and drinks while watching the film. You look up and there is the movie, you look to the left, there is the movie, you look to the right there is the movie, dope right?!
The film itself was funny, trippy, and symbolic while depicting these two robots who go on this journey to become human. I get a kick out of the helmets every time. Don't expect to hear "one more time" blaring in the background either. The film is weird, and very very fun. If your not into stuff like that the new Monkeytown is worth the hike off the L train.
