Guitarist Warren Haynes annual Christmas Jams are known for their jaw-dropping moments, but this years star-studded, 20th anniversary throw-down held December 12th and 13th in Haynes hometown of Asheville, North Carolina had more than usual. The one that silenced the 7,200 partiers who packed the Asheville Civic Center on the first night came when Haynes and one of his rock roll heroes, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, appeared onstage together and played a stirring, acoustic guitar and mandolin version of the Zeppelin classic, Going to California.
When Haynes changed the lyrics to Going to Carolina with an aching in my heart, the crowd erupted. The duet came about three-quarters of the way into the Friday night show, which began with a performance by Haynes band Govt Mule, at about 7 p.m., and didnt end until more than nine hours later, at 4:20 a.m. Saturday morning, when Haynes other group, the Allman Brothers Band, hit the last note of One Way Out.
Sandwiched in between were performances from the Derek Trucks Band, Joan Osborne, country singer Travis Tritt, bluegrass king Del McCoury jamming with gospel group the Lee Boys, and New Orleans funk band Ivan Nevilles Dumpstaphunk.

The Raconteurs have been on a tear this year after the release of their latest album, Consoler Of The Lonely, playing sold out theaters and crowded festival sets across the world. Apparently, in between all of that constant touring, they also had time to have a little fun for themselves. Jack White has always dabbled with his country influences, even taking the ultimate step into the genre by producing one of country legend Loretta Lynn's recent albums. The White Stripes never had much of a twang to their work, but The Raconteurs have always worked a country flair into their music. It wasn't until Consoler that they truly adapted to the western sound with the addition of a banjo and a fiddle to many of the songs. Now, with the help of bluegrass troubadour Ricky Skaggs and newcomer Ashley Monroe, they have truly crossed the genre barrier by making their "Old Enough" into a string-heavy, front-porch burner.

Unfortunately, the video for the Cookers remix to Kid Cudis Day Nite turned out to be kind of stupid. Fortunately, Cudi realized it before the video was released and decided to pull the plug. Unfortunately, its 2008 so it leaked on the web almost instantly anyway. Besides the fact that leading off with the dance-y remix to the single was questionable to begin with, the goofy clip features Cudi and some models dancing around a grocery store at night after he gets stoned in the bathroomit was probably supposed to be ironic or something but the director didnt pull it off.
Taking a page from his bosss playbook, Cudi greased-up his caps-lock key and posted a passionate on his blog. As per his request, the video is being taken down on some sites but its still pretty easy to come across. Take a look so you can say you did.

Aqui fica o video de I Lust U (feat. Cate Le Bon) e o deslumbre eletrônico de Neon Neon. Nada de novo no universo da música eletrônica, mas a música é boa pra caramba.

Drummer for the Arctic Monkeys Matt Helder said that the Arctic Monkeys could be finished with their new album by the end of November. He said to the Guardian: "We're gonna do a bit more recording next month and then we'll probably be in here for most of December getting ready to go out again, We made a start on it a few weeks ago and we're gonna go back and try and finish it off. That'll be two blocks of two weeks. It's probably do-able for us to finish it in this next block. But we don't want to put pressure on by saying, 'we've got to finish it this time'." Wow, the amount of musical output that Alex Turner has released since 2006 is extraordinary. He released an Arctic Monkeys album in 2006 and 2007, a Last Shadow Puppets album this year and now a new Arctic Monkeys album next year and that's not even counting b-sides.

Frightened Rabbit released The Midnight Organ Fight in mid-April (get it now?). To be frank, hearing it now, we can't help but feel that we had a chunk of our soul missing for the past six months. The record is loaded with vocal and instrumental urgency that makes you want to jump up and scream and clap your hands and wrap your arms around anyone you can find. We know, it sounds crazy and extreme, but it's real.
The band has managed to construct arrangements that at first listen seem driving, simple, and clean. It's only on further listen that one realizes that the parts are remarkably intricate and ornate. It's the melding of their respective nuances that allows them to come across as a single unified force, despite their complexity.
On top of it all Scott Hutchison's vocals deliver the band's heart on a sleeve. His lyrics are those of a lover who has been dismissed, but recovered. There is sadness is braced with a strong wit, and a realization that the feeling of loss is not necessarily a feeling of desire. In short, Hutchison's voice is remarkably self aware: it is at once loathing of itself, those around him, and no one at all.
We suppose it goes without saying, but in case you're a bit slow on the uptake: we love this record. We picked it up on a whim, and couldn't be happier that we did so. It is a masterpiece of lyric, music, and soul. To some of you we're probably coming across as cheese balls, but if we weren't willing to get this excited about a record, would you really want to trust us about anything? We didn't think so.
So here's the real treat: the band's doing two shows at Bottom Of The Hill this weekend, on Saturday and Sunday night. Unfortunately, the HAD crew has a NYC based obligation, so we're going to have to make do with the band's new live release (released just last week). But you, dear reader, can go and check it out, and love it, and kiss it, and hug it. Because this music is very, very, good.

Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN
The legislative race in Minnesota House District 29A is between incumbent Randy Demmer, a Republican seeking his fourth term, and Jim Jensen, a DFLer who has worked in law enforcement for 29 years.
Jensen was on school board
A deputy sheriff for the Dodge County Sheriff's Office, Jensen's public service includes nearly nine years as a member of the Triton School Board.
With so much experience listening to people and solving problems, Jensen said, he decided to run for state office because "I can represent more people and help more people on that level than at the school board level."
Education is one of the main issues for the DFLer in the election to represent District 29A, which covers Dodge County and the northwest corner of Olmsted County. Jensen, a Dodge Center resident, said he believes more funding is needed for education and that the current funding formula is flawed.
"Over the past 17 years, funding hasn't kept up with inflation and there is now a funding gap of over $500 per student," Jensen said.
Another priority for Jensen is the economy and increasing the number of jobs in Minnesota.
Although Jensen said he doesn't have a detailed plan on how more jobs could be created, he believes there is potential for expanding employment opportunities among companies focused on alternative energy.
"I think we're in a very good area here of the state, especially with the wind energy here," Jensen said. "We could develop more of that, creating more jobs here but I think we also need to be involved in the research and development of other green jobs."
Demmer sees watchdog role
Demmer was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2002. He decided to seek another term this year after losing the GOP endorsement for Congress to Mayo Clinic physician Brian Davis.
In serving as a legislator, Demmer describes the role as that of a watchdog.
"As a representative of my area, I'm responsible to watch for legislation that may be harmful to my area or harmful to the thinking or the philosophical approach of my area," Demmer said. Another responsibility, he said, is to help constituents navigate the "tangled web of resources" in state government to resolve their issues.
The top priority in the next legislative session will be the state budget, Demmer said. He believes legislators "must contain any growth in state government spending to the growth in tax revenue provided by increased economic activity rather than increased rates of taxation."
Economic development and education are among his other key issues, although he adds agriculture, health care and energy to the list.
"I'm not a single-issue person," he said. "I see everything through the lens of how it affects everything else."
No matter which political party a legislator belongs to, Demmer said, every one of them wants what is best for the state.
"What we disagree on is how to get there," he said.

-GUTTER TWINS
All Gutter Twins posters (with the exception of those ordered in the last week) have gone out and should be in hand. If not, please check with your local post office first as the tubes, from time to time, will stall there for one reason or another.
Also, there are only about 15 GT posters left, and there will be no 3rd printing, so if you want, go get.
-ARTISAN SUNDAYS
Every first Sunday from May- October the North Market is hosting Artisan Sundays featuring 30 local artists, jewelry makers, craft folk and so on. Im there all summer so if youre in the central Ohio area, come check it out. This past Sunday was the first and was great fun- beautiful weather and even a visit to the market (though not to any artisan booths) from Elvis Costello who was playing later that night with the Police (amazing show, by the way!)
The next one is June 1, so come on down and check it out! Find out more about Artisan Sundays at www.northmarket.com
-WEBSITE
Were hoping to launch the new Reno website in June. Of course, this could change depending on how busy I stay, but it is the current goal.
-NEW POSTERS
New posters coming soon: Rilo Kiley, The New Pornographers, Nada Surf, Old 97s, and maybe an Over the Rhine poster as well.

White Lies - one of my finds of the year - took to the stage on this the first headlining tour showcasing tracks from the forthcoming debut album. Having seen them at Latitude I had been looking forward to seeing them in a smaller environment with the right atmosphere. You know I love to see the whites of a bands eyes, and as I settled in the cramped photo pit I could feel the tension. Lead singer Harry Mc Veigh reminded me very much of Ian Curtis as he clung to the microphone. He is both very confident yet has an air of vulnerability. They managed to hold my attention for the full set despite the fact that halfway through the P.A went down for 10 minutes. This would have phased many bands. However they came back, the crowd loved it, it seemed to up the tempo and by the time the band finished with the current single there was a serious mosh pit. To sum up the album, it is going to be a pleasure to own judged on a first hearing live. Leaving the singles to one side, the stand out track was A Place To Hide.
Band of the night though were The Joy Formidable.

Is the point of posting this here to stir up some kind of grassroots movement? I think the plans, or even just photos, of your vehicle should be available before anyone decides to jump on your human-powered bandwagon. The last few seconds of grainy video above is the first time Ive seen this conveyance.
And its pretty frightening. Pedicabs Ive seen not only appear to have stronger rear wheels, but they are built with a welded frame that would appear to be much lighter than your cab. Also, Im not seeing the cable that leads from your bike, to the rear brakes. ARE there brakes on that trailer? Do you seriously expect normal road-bike caliper brakes and a tiny road-bike contact patch to reliably stop the vehicle when loaded with passengers? Theres also the fact that this is a trailer mounted on the back of a normal bike. Actual pedicabs are a large tricycle. They have a more stable three-point stance, while your vehicle is susceptible to jackknifing.
In any case, heres one engineer who wouldnt stamp this with approval. Maybe youve actually covered all of the above concerns, and in person the vehicle shows more thought for safety. Id say to get the engineer inspection set up, but should have been after your first visit. Four times? You know what they say about trying the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results.

I hope everyone reads my input! I may be saving a life! Looking at the design from the standpoint of an engineer and certified welder this model fails miserably. No engineer or welder would put his stamp of approval on it. The industry standard for bikes as well as pedicabs has always been reenforced steel tubing with MIG/TIG welds since the beginning of time. Never seen a bike constructed of Telespar perforated tubing. Nor a trailer. Reason? It is used for sign posts because it breaks away on impact!
note these specifications: The reason is simple.
The Telespar system was engineered specifically
for sign-support use, then perfected with the help of traffic-control professionals.
B R E A K AWAY
A N C H O R
A two-piece breakaway system is easily created by
adding a 12 gauge outer sleeve of the next larger size tube to the original anchor base. This additional
sleeve, approximately 18 long, provides a double wall thickness to accomplish the breakaway function.
SLIP BASE
EAKAWAY SYSTEM
AASHTO standards for structural supports of highway signs require the change of velocity standards for 1800 pound vehicles be met. The Slip Base meets those requirements as put forth in the NCHRP-350 report as the post will break off.
Today most vehicles weigh more than 1800 lbs! So if you get hit from any direction your pedicab will shatter and just blow apart and more than likely someone will be seriously injured, if not killed. There is not any vehicle made using this material and to do so is, well just dumb! All manufacturers of pedicabs follow the standard use of steel tubing with their units as well as the hitch. The only nuts and bolts found on these are for the wheels and hitches. Its common sense that bolts loosen, and crack or just break on force. And Telespar? Well read the specs as listed above . . .if it was safe would the industry not be using it???
your prototype itself is all wrong as far as design and balance as well as the safety aspect. Not to say it looks like a giant erector set! Expect to bottom out or flip. And just blow apart! This pedicab is an accident looking to happen, and it will over time. Best to use it at home or just park it and not risk injury to another!
I suggest maybe you take a class in design, engineering and welding and buy a welder and the proper materials. You would be wise to scrap this project and just start over or hire someone who knows what their doing. I feel pretty strong that your insurance company is not aware of the materials you used as they would never cover a vehicle used for public transportation made with Telespar. Its cheap because its only used by highway departments in the erection of sign posts! You said you doubled it??? One peice inside the other??? That only makes the breakaway that much quicker.
It is my understanding that you have recently received your permit. I hope all the other pedicabbers read this and pass it on to their peers, friends, family and fares. I am sending a report in to the proper authorities whom I feel were badgered into giving you your license to kill.

Ohhh Gunn.
Anyway, I do have one positive thing to say about this guy after
digging through everything hes blogged or posted. That is- first, if
he put as much energy into building a decent trailer as he put into
building that crap and fighting for it, hed probably have a nice cab!
Secondly, I wish I still had that youthfull exuberance!!!
Now to point out his flaw and throw a wrench in his spokes, pun
Intended!!!
If any of you dug into his report and saw the part where he qualifies
his design because of shear strength and surface contact etc., vs.
welded joints and surface contact. Well read it, its good. Honestly
it took me a little bit, ok 5 min, to figure out why he was wrong. At
first it almost made sense!! Yikes!! I knew it couldnt be but he did
a lot of math! And I respect numbers. However, knowing it couldnt
possibly be, that his bolted together theory is stronger than a welded
4130 chro-mo joint, I figured out his flaw. Pretty simple actually.
Ashamed it took me more than 30 seconds to figure out. His connections
are not bonded by the entire surface are in which they connect and
overlap. Just go read it. So one of the numbers in his equation are
false. His actual surface area for the equation should be the surface
area under the head of his nut and bolt. Which, BTW, are grade 5. Come
on. Grade 8 isnt that much more. Regardless. His claim is that hes
got about 2 square inches of connection of so. Where as hes really
only got maybe 1/8 of contact area in his connections.
Again, Ive lost the exuberance that would allow me to do the math
here. But my limited knowledge of math and engineering tell me hes
got somewhere around 3000lbs of shear strength. Multiply that by the
leverage and stress loads on a given joint and Im honestly amazed
its able to hold itself together!
Sad thing is he rode my cabs for some time. So he knows the
difference. Im just wondering if hes not a little mentally unstable?
Not being rude here. Just seems like a logical conclusion. Someone
that puts that much energy into this, as he has, and comes up with
that, must have some grade 5 bolts loose???

only got maybe 1/8 of contact area in his connections.

I dont know where WSNs Anne Werner got the idea that Joe Lieberman is still philosophically and somewhat politically a Democrat (whatever somewhat politically means), but hes not. Hes a mean old Republican hack of the Richard Nixon school who caucuses with the Democrats solely for reasons of political expediency - and I cant wait for an expanded Democratic majority to show him the door after this election (full disclosure: I spent seven months in high school trying to help show him the door as a communications intern for his 2006 Democratic challenger, Ned Lamont).

Bullock and others have also shown that some refutations can strengthen misinformation, especially among conservatives.
Political scientists Brendan Nyhan and Jason Reifler provided two groups of volunteers with the Bush administrations prewar claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. One group was given a refutation the comprehensive 2004 Duelfer report that concluded that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction before the United States invaded in 2003. Thirty-four percent of conservatives told only about the Bush administrations claims thought Iraq had hidden or destroyed its weapons before the U.S. invasion, but 64 percent of conservatives who heard both claim and refutation thought that Iraq really did have the weapons. The refutation, in other words, made the misinformation worse.
A similar backfire effect also influenced conservatives told about Bush administration assertions that tax cuts increase federal revenue. One group was offered a refutation by prominent economists that included current and former Bush administration officials. About 35 percent of conservatives told about the Bush claim believed it; 67 percent of those provided with both assertion and refutation believed that tax cuts increase revenue.
In a paper approaching publication, Nyhan, a PhD student at Duke University, and Reifler, at Georgia State University, suggest that Republicans might be especially prone to the backfire effect because conservatives may have more rigid views than liberals: Upon hearing a refutation, conservatives might argue back against the refutation in their minds, thereby strengthening their belief in the misinformation. Nyhan and Reifler did not see the same backfire effect when liberals were given misinformation and a refutation about the Bush administrations stance on stem cell research.

Alela Diane performs at the Tractor Tavern at 9 p.m. Sunday for $10
Oh, you don't get to go to Musicfest NW this weekend? Me either. But instead of being sad and moping because you have to work, or because you can't afford it, or because your mom is in town and you have to entertain her (or if you're me, all of the f*cking above), you can console yourself by attending one of these events, any of which will immediately make you forget all about those Portland assholes enjoying a line-up that's as good as (and arguably better than) Bumbershoot's.
Tonight:
Love As Laughter, Oxford Collapse, the Sea Navy
Sunset Tavern, 10 p.m., $10
Brooklyn rock veterans Love As Laughter are currently touring in support of their latest record, Holy, and if you haven't heard it (or them) yet, go to the show, where you will get the warm fuzzies all over, and then buy the record immediately so you can take those warm fuzzies home with you. Plus, as you probably know already, Sub Pop signee Oxford Collapse recently released an album, BITS, and they, too, are worthy of your attention and dollars. And 'cause it's at the Sunset, it'll be a nice, cozy show. Awww.
Concert for Change feat. Flipper, Tiny Vipers, the Nextdoor Neighbors, Active I, Jinu Park
El Corazon, 7 p.m., $15, all ages
It may cost $15, but your hard-earned cash will go to a good cause: the Obama campaign. And even if you're not an Obama supporter (also, former Hillary supporters: if you're not one post-Palin, who is a total far-right nutjob, you are no longer allowed to call yourselves progressive, says I), the line-up is so damn good that you should go anyway. Seriously, there's something for everyone: you've got your seminal punk rock (Flipper), your folky art rock (Tiny Vipers, the Nextdoor Neighbors) and your hip hop (Active I, Jinu Park). See? Obama's always bringing people (and genres) together. Now, go out and party, but do not, under any circumstances, forget to register to vote if you haven't already!
Polvo, Trans Am
Neumos, 8 p.m., $15
Another pricey one, but so worth it, and I'll let Michael Alan Goldberg tell you why:
North Carolina foursome Polvo helped define and influence indie-rock (and subset math-rock) via their initial eight-year, four-LP run from 1990 to 1998. The band split amicably a decade ago, but re-formed earlier this year (with a new drummer) when Explosions in the Sky invited Polvo to play the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in England. The subsequent U.S. touring the quartet has done this summer has gone so well that they plan to record a new album in the fall. "I don’t think there was ever a sense of unfinished business," singer-guitarist Ash Bowie recently told me, "but it's great to get this chance to revisit some old songs we like and to write some new ones."
Grayskul, Mad Rad, Josh Martinez, Locke, DJ Zone
Nectar, 9 p.m., $10
Another fab local dance party, featuring local hip hop favorites Grayskul and the ghettotech masters of Mad Rad. A good place to blow off some steam.
Saturday and Sunday, coming right up after the jump.

Carlos Augusto Alves Santana (born July 20, 1947), known simply as Carlos Santana or Santana, is a Grammy Award-winning Mexican-born American Latin rock musician and guitarist. He became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, the Santana Blues Band, going mostly under the title "Santana," which created a highly successful blend of salsa, rock, blues, and jazz fusion. Their sound featured his often high-pitched and distorted guitar lines set against Latin American instrumentation such as timbales and congas. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades, and experienced a sudden resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s. Over his career he has sold an estimated 80 million albums worldwide. George "Buddy" Guy (born July 30, 1936) is an American blues and rock guitarist and singer. Known as an inspiration to Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and other 1960s blues and rock legends, Guy is considered an important exponent of Chicago blues. He is the father of female rapper Shawnna. Guy is known for his showmanship; for example, he plays his guitar with drumsticks, or strolls into the audience while jamming and trailing a long guitar cord. Born in Lettsworth, Louisiana, Guy grew up in Louisiana where he learned to play guitar at a womens trucker convention[citation needed]. In the early '50s he began performing with bands in Baton Rouge. Soon after moving to Chicago in 1957, Guy fell under the influence of Muddy Waters. In 1958, a competition with West Side guitarists Magic Sam and Otis Rush gave Guy a record contract. Soon afterwards he recorded for the Cobra label. He recorded sessions with Junior Wells for Delmark Records under the pseudonym Friendly Chap in 1965 and 1966.
