Thanks to Thanksgiving it was time for the annual Survivor recap episode and this year we were treated to more extras then ever before! Many new scenes were broadcast to our screens tonight along with the application videos of the final eight of Survivor Gabon. Randy started things off by giving us a glimpse into his home. He was talking to his dead dogs urn, not surprising, but it makes reference to a future New Scene were Randy shows his softer side to Matty. Crystals audition seemed to be at a casting call where she called out her golden medal, saying that theyve probably already heard of her. Sugar seemed a completely different person and nothing like she is on the show. Wearing a full on nose ring, Sugar exclaimed her homelessness and want for Survivor to help her grow up. Bobs application was completely done at this school that he teaches. He seemed more fun and lighthearted then he is portrayed on the show as he cracked jokes with the lunch ladies.
Corinnes audition was next and she was full on bitch, similar to her new scenes as well. Wearing a bikini, Corinne waded by the pool, rattled off her college degrees and let producers know she tells it like it is. Susies application was a complete sit down and somewhat nice to see. It was in her element, her home, and she seemed much more sane there. Kennys was rather odd as he seemed five years younger when he made it. With braces on you could hardly tell it was Kenny but sure enough it was! He let producers know that his strategy would be to always think ten times ahead. Pretty much what hes been doing. Mattys was last and it seemed almost TOO well done. The quality was the best out of all of them, as if CBS sent a film crew to his house after realizing he was probably and never sent in a tape.
After the applications it was time for the recap. Unlike past years the show actually focused on new scenes rather then just rattling off everything that happened. In the first new snippet we saw first Fang swimming and getting leeches. Randy was first to get one followed by Matty, who swore he wouldnt get any. He didnt seem to happy but it was obvious they were in there. There werent many new scenes about first Kota other then Bobs ability to create stuff around camp. It was nice to see a glimpse of Bob from the start as he wasnt shown much when the first episodes aired. After the merge the rest of the show was pretty much about Sugar. She had a completely new segment from the Sugar Shack, aka Exile Island, where she skinny dipped and acted as if she was at a nude beach. Surely we didnt see THAT on the show. Sometimes I wonder why clips like that miss air, maybe we can blame Marcus for that one. She also got a few nods from Jeff as being in control of the whole Nobag tribe. It seemed they were setting it up for a them with only Bob and Corinne seen as the power houses. Although they WERE in power, Bob and Corinne are lambs to the slaughter, using Aces term, for the next episodes unless a big change occurs. Knowing this group and the craziness of the past episodes though, I have a feeling we havent seen the craziest go down just yet.

Information

Patti Smith Smells Like Teen Spirit
One of the best new covers of 07, she infused banjo, brushed drums, and an unprecedented attention to lyrical clarity in her singing that makes it seem like a singer-songwriter number instead of a grunge rave-up.

Gringo Floyd In Bloom
Off one of those lame The [Insert Random Musical Genre] Tribute to [Insert Band of a Very Different Genre] albums, this cocktail instrumental mixes horns with some weird synthesizer riffs and the occasional breathy sigh to get your head bobbing.

Caetano Veloso Come As You Are
Keeping the sassy swing going, Brazils Veloso infuses a smooth latin feel into this one, slowing it down a bit and bringing out a new guitar line only implied in the original.

Steve Earle Breed
Recorded for the B-Sides album Side Tracks, he keeps the same general feel using his own gruff snarl.

The Polyphonic Spree Lithium
A bouncy, pretty version that keeps the levity going even through the loud chorus, aided by the girls backing vocals halfway through each verse. The happiest song ever with lyrics like m so lonely and Maybe Im to blame for all Ive heard.

Animal Collective Polly
Fast strumming behind molasses-slow vocals, this is a radio version of a vinyl-only cover thats been making the blog circuit. Good by itself, better on acid.

Ill Nino - Territorial Pissings
Similar to the original, but even harder, with a metal voice yelling the Gotta run away but keeping the tune for the rest. Nothing revelatory, but decent. If anyone has a better cover of this one, let me know.

Coco Drain You
Thought Id never find an interesting cover of this, until a discovered this Asian electro-pop version on their myspace page. Its a love-it-or-hate-it genre, but I enjoy it in small doses.

The Retroliners Lounge Act
A surf instrumental of this one, these vocal-free takes show just how good Cobain was at crafting a tunewhich he could then all-but bury under waves of distortion.

UK Subs Stay Away
If the Sex Pistols had covered Nirvana.

Rogue Wave On a Plain
A strummed indie version, it sounds both wistful and hopeful at the same time.

Tricky Something In the Way
Taking samples from here and there, underground DJ Tricky does a funky hip-hop sort of cover using Hawkman on vocals. Very interesting, very cool, and almost unrecognizable from the original.

My most inspirational book to date is Napoleon Hills Think and Grow Rich. I remember the first time reading thinking, oh my God, people are going to think Im so f**ked up in the head. Thats still out for debate, but the metaphysical aspects were hard to digest initially.
More specifically the philosophy of autosuggestion and goal setting. If you arent familiar I suggest you pick up the book and read it twice before really passing judgment. Autosuggestion is the process where you influence your subconscious mind with thoughts or ideas you want to embody. Its gotten to the point where Ill ask open ended questions to myself. According to philosophy, the subconscious mind looks for an answer and thus you influence it.
A good example of this, but not one I necessarily use all the time: Why is money attracted to me?
Its almost a nature vs. nurture battle for a part of your mind that is technically intangible. On a daily basis you read aloud your goals and desires and throughout the day you basically convince yourself until you begin to exhibit the desired traits or outcomes. It sounds bat-shit crazy, I know.
But strangely, I keep a 35 index card in my wallet of some of my 6month and 1 year goals, and while I dont check them out as much as I should, every time I go through my wallet I see the colored index card and I immediately remember the goals.
Maybe its the fact that I dont like to fail when I set a goal. Maybe all my decisions are influenced by recalling my goals on a more than regular basis, but since Ive really written down goals and saw them on a daily basis things have begun to gain momentum.
Ive made more strides in the past 6 months than what seems like forever. Im a big advocate of the metaphysical, and still learning more about the law of attractionbut to date, I cant refute it. Metaphysics goes way beyond using your mind to influence the outside world. It covers space and time, but Im speaking strictly from a standpoint of transmuting internal desire to written word to result.
Call it what you want; metaphysics, mind over matter. The law of attraction may not exist, and it may be coincidental. But if you walk talk and act like the things you want to attract to yourself, it only seems natural that sooner or later youll achieve what you set out to.
If you dont believe it exists, you got nothing to lose. But if you do believe it exists, well then youve got a helluva lot to gain. (Thanks to Daniel for thateven though he said it about religion).

I love Heavy Metal, but I was a little late embracing this genre. Through the 80s I was into the glam metal and the hair bands, but didnt discover my love of true heavy metal until the latter part of the decade. I purchased Metallicias And Justice For All in 1988 and fell in love with the album. From there I started venturing out in to Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Helloween, among others. I still listened to all the other forms of music I had previously enjoyed, but added Heavy Metal to the list of musical styles that suited my personal taste.

I often have to defend metal more than other genres. There are those I have encountered who just cant understand my fascination with this form of music. I try to explain that I love the energy, the lyrics and the unpredictability of a metal song. When listening to a metal song, you are often not sure what direction it will take, as it often doesnt follow the formula of a rock song. Sometimes, the number of riffs could be removed from one good metal song to make 3 or 4 rock songs.

Here are my five favorite metal bands.

5. Edguy
Hailing from Germany, they are the newest band on my list. They do borderline metal/hard rock and even have a touch of hair band sound in them. However, I clearly rank them as a metal band. They have lots of energy, great lyrics and big choruses. Perhaps the reason why I like them so much is because they sound like such a great blend of all my favorite musical styles.

Favorite Album: Rocket Ride. If you heard this album only, you would likely classify Edguy as a hard rock band. A close second for me is Hellfire Club. Their newest disc is due out in November.

4. Gamma Ray
Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter left an awesome metal band, Helloween, in the late 80s to form another awesome metal band, Gamma Ray. They first appeared on the scene in the early 90s when I was really embracing metal as hair bands were fading fast. Grunge was taking over, and although I bought into it somewhat, I still preferred the sounds of such bands as Metallica and Megadeath at the time. Gamma Ray came along at just the right time for me and has released a string of great albums since.

Favorite Album: No World Order released in 2001 is my favorite Gamma Ray effort from start to finish.

3. Metallica
These guys were the first for me. They have a wealth of great material. They have received some criticism from metal fanatics for becoming too commercial over the years. I am not so hard on them, even if the music was a little more commercial, it was still metal and Metallica moved it right into the mainstream.

Favorite Album: And Justice For All is still my favorite. Contains the great song One, which has a great music video, which is based on a great book called Johnny Got His Gun.

2. Judas Priest: They have been called metal gods and are one of the most influential acts of the genre. Few bands do it better, and many would argue that no one does. Famed singer Rob Halford had a lengthy hiatus from the band in which they continued to record and tour. However, with Halfords return in recent years, the band is back as great as they ever were.

Favorite Album: Angel of Retribution. With the many fantastic albums they have put out over the years, I am putting this 2005 release at the top. It marked Halfords return and one of the best metal albums I have heard from start to finish in a long time.

1. Iron Maiden
One of my all time favorite bands - period. They embrace everything I think is wonderful about Heavy Metal. I enjoy every Iron Maiden album; there is not one that I would give a poor rating. Famed vocalist Bruce Dickinson has also released some strong solo efforts too, all of which I think are great. I even like Dickinsons first solo album Tattooed Millionaire, which was criticized for being a departure from metal. The band continues to thrive and perform in front of large crowds worldwide. And they are on top of my list of concerts I want to attend.

Favorite Album: It is tough for me to pick a favorite Maiden album, but Ill go with Number of the Beast.

Personally, I think not. Ill admit, I was a WoW junkie for a half of a year or so, but it all came to an abrupt end when the majority of my friends accounts got banned for gliding. For those of you who do not know what gliding is, it is automating actions in WoW so that you dont have to engage in collecting money, exp, honor points, etc. When everyone hoarded over to Age of Conan, I did too, because I, apparently, have no free will. Actually, the true reason was that it actually looked kind of cool. It was being touted the next WoW and all, the graphics looked cool (Im a tech nerd.. DX10!!!).. but after playing it a week and a half, I deemed it unfit to WoW as THE MMORPG of the world. Here are the few reasons why I thought so.
1. Way too buggy. Of course, most MMORPGs are buggy as hell on launch, but this was a little too hard to bear. For each of my friends, there was a unique and different problem. For me, it was that it BSODed when it was played on full screen, but it didnt on windowed mode. *shrug
2. Lack of diverse gameplay elements. So far, my experience with AoC has been cool graphics, nice combat system, but way too much repetition. I would almost compare it to the Assassins Creed. I believe as more people join and patches come out, it will diversify and become more fun.
3. The gameplay is nowhere as continuous. And this may be the breaker for AoC, because although bugs can be fixed and gameplay elements added with patches, I doubt it is possible to do away with loading screens that come up every five seconds in AoC, compared to WoWs once-in-a-year loading screen.

Foo Fighters: Dave is OK in OKC

  • Jul. 18th, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Y'allapalooza is Q104's summer music festival. Over the course of eight hours, you'll hear some true country, plus lots of rock 'n roll. That's what makes the yung'uns (above) shake and rattle (and drink).
For one of his encores, Gary Allan, the headliner of the 13th annual Y'allapalooza, covered a Tom Petty classic, That wasn't the first time we heard Tom Petty out at Sandstone on Friday. Before Allan took the stage, the public-address system played Last Dance with Mary Jane and, in the general-admission pit in front of the stage, the young crowd sang-along like it was a song by Kenny Chesney. Or the Foo Fighters.

1. In the same segment with Triumph, Grohl encouraged viewers to stick around to watch Billboard honoree Sting collect Social Security. Not only did Sting seem to love the barb as it was delivered, but the Foos opened for The Police last year in Los Angeles.
2. At subsequent microphones, Grohl has thanked Clive Davis, whose label has managed many an contestant through the years.
3. As Entertainment Weekly notes, s full-length debut is scheduled for a November release on RCA Records, the same label that distributes the Foos albums.
4. Cook does the song justice.
Still, Grohl doesnt exactly have love for everyone in the music business (ahemCourtneyLoveahem).
Plus, Cook wasnt as mind-blowing as, say, Prince was at last years Super Bowl halftime show. Although YouTube has removed all audio evidence of The Purple Ones epic performance, his cover of the Foos Best of You still gives me chills.
Then again, few musicians are better than Prince, period, so its unfair to critique Cook for that.
