Next, a poem by Mary Oliver:
FIRST SNOW
The snow
began here
this morning and all day
continued, its white
rhetoric everywhere
calling us back to why, how,
whence such beauty and what
the meaning; such
an oracular fever! flowing
past windows, an energy it seemed
would never ebb, never settle
less than lovely! and only now,
deep into night,
it has finally ended.
The silence
is immense,
and the heavens still hold
a million candles; nowhere
the familiar things:
stars, the moon,
the darkness we expect
and nightly turn from. Trees
glitter like castles
of ribbons, the broad fields
smolder with light, a passing
creekbed lies
heaped with shining hills;
and though the questions
that have assailed us all day
remain-not a single
answer has been found-
walking out now
into the silence and the light
under the trees,
and through the fields,
feels like one.
And, finally, an (edited) iTunes mix, the result of using "snow" as the search term:
1. Snow Crush Killing Song -- The Mountain Goats
2. Velvet Snow -- Kings of Leon
3. Snow Cherries From France -- Tori Amos
4. Snow (Hey Oh) -- Red Hot Chili Peppers
5. Angel in the Snow -- Elliott Smith
6. Snow Camping -- Laura Veirs
7. Snow Lion -- Readymade FC feat. Feist
8. 20 Years Of Snow -- Regina Spektor
9. Snow On The Sahara -- Anggun
10. Snow -- Loreena McKennitt
11. Snowden -- Doves
12. Snow On The Sahara -- Stanford University Harmonics
13. Snow Is Gone -- Josh Ritter
14. Snowflake Music -- Mark Mothersbaugh
Actually, since that's a partial repeat of last year, here's a "winter" mix to grow on:
1. Faded From The Winter -- Iron Wine
2. The Winter Solstice -- Sufjan Stevens
3. Wait For The Wintertime -- Yeasayer
4. Winter Wonderland -- Aimee Mann
5. Winter -- Tori Amos
6. Winter Is Gone -- Nick Drake
7. In Winter Still -- Dot Allison
8. In The Bleak Mid-Winter -- Shawn Colvin
9. Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind -- Barenaked Ladies
10. The Winter Song -- Eisley
11. Dead Of Winter -- Eels
12.

A while ago, Melissa Gill won a Home Study program through the Chidiet website and Jim Careys promotions. We asked her to provide some updates on her experiences and learning. Heres the first update weve had from the trenches! Sounds like shes had her nose in books!
Heres the feedback on a fantastic experience she had with her elementary school class and green smoothies. Well be posting this on the Green Smoothie Blog as well, where you can check out a lot more recipes and inspiration about Green Smoothies!
Hello Ladies!
So here goes the first installment of my CHIdiet experience.
After having a couple of months to begin to digest the information Ive studied so far in this course, I know that I have only scratched the surface of all it entails. The information is very detailed and wide in scope. It begins with talk on enzymes, chlorophyll, and the life of Ann Wigmore. It goes on to talk about how to set up your raw food kitchen, benefits of this lifestyle, as well as how to transition to a living foods diet. Eating simply and sleeping well, drinking pure water and the power of thought are all touched uponand this is just the beginning.
Being a teacher by trade, my thoughts kept turning back to how I could introduce this lifestyle to my students without turning them off the idea of eating healthier. They are a group that lives on sugar, processed foods, and the traditional SAD diet. I have a new class this year and they were not fully aware of how I eat, or why. I am very open about what I eat and they see me in class, eating my raw, fresh, ripe, organic fruit and salads. They also see me with various concoctions - warming chia pudding, and the like. Something they havent seen me eat is my green smoothie. I began bringing my green smoothie jar to the school instead of drinking it at home in the morningsI wanted to pique their interest, and pique it did! Theyve always been curious about how I eat and I always tell them, if they ask.
The green smoothies were really the turning point! Every day theyd ask what I put into it and wanted to smell it and were so extremely curious about the whole idea of eating a drink that was so green. In fact one student asked if I had my drink, when it was missing from the desktop that day. Wed been enjoying Fruitful Fridays each week, where I bring in a different fruit for the students to try. They students bring in fruit to include in our Friendship Fruit Salad and we all have our class meeting while learning about a new fruit each Friday as well as enjoying a great fruit salad that we all made together. The first week we did that, the students made me swear not to tell their parents that they enjoyed eating healthy or else theyd be made to do so by force instead of choicea valid point! However if you make this type of food available and tasty, they are bound to make a good choice!
Because of their interest in the green smoothie, I decided last Friday morning to bring my Vitamix to class and have a demo on how to make a green smoothie. The students were aware that I was going to do this and were full of anticipation when I opened the classroom door that day. First, they could not believe how huge the blender was, then their eyes became as big as moons when they saw how much kale I had ready to put into the drink! It was amazing how interested they all were! They are so impressionable at this age and this seed of an idea that was planted that day will reap rewards in the months and years to come.
I told them about the benefits of each food that I put into the blender. We made a very simple smoothie.

Lou Reed sang, Her life was saved by rock and roll in 1969, and he probably wasnt the first. He said he wrote that line and that song about himself: If I hadnt heard rock and roll on the radio, I would have had no idea there was life on this planet. Which would have been devastating to think that everything, everywhere was like it was where I come from. That would have been profoundly discouraging.
Its a theme thats been a constant in rock and roll, but it often gets lost in the commercialization of big-name music. Even among Green Day fans, theres a tendency to discount the feelings of those who say Green Days music means everything to them, or that it saved their life, by cynics who insist its just entertainment.
But its not just entertainment, certainly not for many, and those probably number in the hundreds of thousands. For those of us for whom actual religion has been a disappointment, a source of guilt and false promises (no offense intended to anyone) theres a real need to find something genuine and honest that can provide inspiration and something more. I dont think its over the top to call it salvation.
One doesnt have to look far to see sorrow and resignation. Its all around us. Life can be very gray. But it doesnt have to be. You just have to know where to look for solace and joy. There may be a lot more comfort to be found in tangibles like family and friends than in something as ethereal as music, but those relationships are fraught with the push and pull of mutual responsibility, a constant give and take. Rock and roll asks nothing of you, except for maybe a few measly dollars to buy a record or a concert ticket, nothing too painful to give up for most of us, and in return it gives all of itself, for the taking.
It may be just as hard to explain to any non-believer as any religious feeling. But if youre reading this then you probably know it already and dont require any explanation.
Its gratifying to hear Billie Joe saying outright what so many of us feel, to hear him acknowledge that yes, were not crazy, he feels it too and knows that thats what hes doing with his music: offering solace, comfort, and liberation. Hes said similar things before, like in Bullet in a Bible, for instance, but for a long time he was very wary. Perhaps with an album like Dookie it was harder to talk about religion (My life was saved by a song about masturbation?). But there was every bit of salvation offered up in the honesty and power of those songs, and millions of teenagers and some not-so-teenagers knew it even back then.
With the Foxboro Hot Tubs tour, any wariness was gone. There was no question that Billie Joe was offering himself up, body and soul, to his audiences. People even commented on whether he had a need to be adored, since he so willingly gave himself over to be pawed and manhandled in a melee of sweat and collective giddiness. And perhaps he does have that need. I dont know and it hardly matters to me. All that matters is that all of us, all the fretful and needy souls just trying to muddle through life as best we can, have this scruffy trio of unlikely saviors to buoy us when we need it and help us on our weary way.

10PM: Law And Order
with Anthony Anderson! What an oddball career hes had. He went from being the wise cracking sidekick in virtually all his work, to the hard ass thug in The Shieldand somewhere in the mix he turned into a character actor with a regular gig on the oldest and most storied cop drama on television. We have no idea how it happened, but no one seemed to notice. Or rather, no one seemed to care. Yeah, thats it. Indifference was probably at play here.
ABC
8PM: Dancing With The Stars
Weve already written about this series enough for a lifetime, heres what we wrote on fucking Monday. Wake me when one of the female professionals is in a porno. Or even something that doesnt subject me to watching people do classical dancing in a desperate attempt for one last shot at the limelight. Man, I feel dirty just thinking about it.
9PM: Private Practice
Whats her face would be better than whats its name, her former show that inspired this spinoff. Considering someone was impaled with an ice sicle in Seattle on the former show, we cant think of anything that could be more poorly conceived.
10PM: Dirty Sexy Money
Hey, we actually watched this show at one point, kinda sorta enjoyed it, vowed to watch it again and never did. Huzzah! In short, its about a dysfunctional rich family in Manhattan, coping with the media scrutiny and their rampant inner-conflict and distrust amongst each other. Basically, its an east coast Arrested Development without the riotus wit. Still solid and about the best you will ever find on ABC, we recommend this and Life if anything. Actually, just watch South Park.
FOX
8PM: Bones
Per the sites description of tonights episode: The smashed remains of a well known artist are found in an impounded junkyard car. In other words, an artist is tragically turned into a flattened corpse and FOX wants you to tune in while sexy detectives run around waxing casually about it. This series just feels so obscure, I cant believe it is still on the air.
9PM: House
The rogue doctor recognizes that you have limitations to the treatment that your body can endure, and that if those limitations are exceeded you could potentially die. But youll die if you do not attempt this treatment, so were going to do it haphazardly whether you like it or not. There. Thats every House episode ever made. Sorry to spoil it so definitively.
CBS
8PM: The New Adventures of Old Christine
God fucking damn it CBS. Why with the traditional sitcoms? Why?! Relative to the rest of your programming, these cant be getting you any ratings sans Two and A Half Men. Or is that just it? You bring in such huge numbers from all the cop/legal dramas that you can suffer bullshit like this? I mean, I cant stand the cop/legal dramas either, but at least theyre an hour long; cutting in half the number of garbage I have to watch.
8:30PM: Gary Unmarried
Jay Mohr, fresh off that breakout role in Jerry Maguire from 1996, now has his own sitcom. In which he plays a hapless schmuck not unlike all the other hapless schmucks that are/have been on sitcom television throughout the years. But, this time, hes divorced! What a unique caveat in the genre.
9PM: Criminal Minds
Our little synopsis in these previews seem to get shorter and shorter the closer you get to the end of the post, and most might assume thats because we get in a hurry to finish it. Were anxious to finally finish writing about these unfortunate circumstances, and one wouldnt be entirely wrong. But the other end of this is I simply run out of shit to say about these CBS series that seem to mimic one another in content, style, setting and tone. What could I possible say about Criminal Minds that wasnt said about CSI, NCIS, Eleventh Hour, Without A Trace, Numb3rs or The Mentalist? I bring it up what most would consider too often, but its usually out of a lack of anything else to say, so Im kind of in a bind, no?
10PM: CSI: NY
Its in New York, so theres no eye candy, no melodramatic David Caruso line readings and no warm weather for the escapists in us up north. Basically, we cant think of a single reason for you to watch this show tonight.
Links later.

“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, He said, It is finished: and He bowed His head, and gave up the ghost.” John 19:30
It is finished. The final words of Jesus Christ before He died.
The phrase, “it is finished” is translated from the Greek word “tetelestai”. Tetelestai is a Greek accounting term meaning “paid in full” from the root word “teleo”.
So Jesus, instead of just saying “I am finished”, as in “I have done what I set out to do”, is actually saying, I did what I set out to do – which is pay in full the debt I came to pay.
Christians are saved thru Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. He paid for our sins. The penalty for our sins was death, separated from God for all eternity in a place called Hell, to later be thrown into the final resting place of the Lake of Fire.
So through Christ’s death, He gave us life. Spiritual, everlasting life. Life in a place called Heaven.
The Greek tense of the word “tetelestai” also is worth noting. It is not in a past tense, but in a tense that indicates that something has been done, is being done, and will always be done. Our salvation through Jesus Christ isn’t something that was done, but could later change. It is done, it will always be done.
If I pay my mortgage in full, and then go to the company a month later and say, “I’ve changed me mind – I don’t want to pay my last mortgage payment”, do you honestly think the company will say, “Sure. No problem. Here’s your money back”?
If I go to my utility company and say I want my last payment back, do you think they’ll give it to me?
When we put our trust and faith in Jesus Christ for what He did for us, and know that it is He, and not us, Who has the power to save us from Hell, we are recognizing that our sin debt has been paid for. That payment will not be rescinded. It will not be reversed. It is a final and eternal payment.
For this reason, we cannot lose our salvation because of sin. If we could, then we could never be saved – because our sins are as numerous as the leaves of fall, and we have no power to either earn our salvation or reverse our salvation. If we did not make the payment, do you really think God would agree to give the payment back to us?
What an insult to Jesus Christ it is to think our ability to sin is greater than His ability to pay our sin debt.
An interesting nugget of knowledge from Scripture: There are only two incidences in Scripture where the words “it is finished” are found.
In these words of Jesus Christ, there is life for any and all who will come to Him by faith.
The other Scripture where the words “it is finished” are found is in James 1:15. And the root word used is “teleo” - the same as in John 19:30.
“Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” James 1:15
Sin, in the end, when it is finished, brings death.
Don't finish your life without Christ.
Thank you, God, for grace.

Green Day is probably one of the most commercially successful punk band of my generation. Formed in 1987, they have sold over 65 million records worldwide and have played countless festivals.
Whatever your personal opinion is of Billie Joe and the gang, there's no denying that Green Day was once a kick-ass punk band. Try listening again to 39/Smooth and Kerplunk and you'll see what I mean. Like most of you, I stopped paying attention when they got too commercialized. But that doesn't take the fact that once, they made me sing along.
Here's and early live footage of Green Day playing Dominated Love Slave.

Virginians Unite!
And unite we did. At the Obama rally held at Ida Lee Park in Leesburg, Virginians sent a unified message about energy. When Obama mentioned investments to create 5 million green jobs and investing in renewables like wind and solar, the crowd in front of him responded with cheers and a public display of hundreds of green scarves to show their support. It was an amazing site to behold to see a message that was so loud and so clear that it didn’t even need words. Here in Northern Virginia, we know what real clean energy is and expect the next President of the United States of American to have a plan to put us on the path to Clean Energy Future.
No one wants to gamble our future on the fairytale of “clean coal.” When our economy is in such a fragile state, the time for telling bedtime stories to ease our fears is over. We need real solutions and when we hear them you better believe we get excited. That’s what happened yesterday in Leesburg and what will continue to happen as this 21st Century energy economy becomes a reality.

Today is the first day of fresh new journey of the rest of my life. I decided to write a blog journal about my new weight loss plan that I came up with. I am trying this new diet of eating fresh and being Green. What makes this diet unique or new? Well keep reading, you will see some ancient secrets of centuries old, I will try to prove to see if they work in todays world, and especially in America. How did all of this start? I weighed my self a few weeks ago, the scale came in at about 272lbs, the highest I have weighed in my whole life. I am only 6, medium built, and 39 years old. A professional high tech marketing guy with a family of two young kids and size 42 waist of khakis. The sad part is they barely fit, and I wasnt getting skinny. I needed to do some thing, and so I started to become a vegetarian, yes a veg as they call it, in my circles. Either you are a veg or a non-veg, that is how East Indians refer to themselves. Last time I was fullly a Veg, I had a waist of 36 and I weighed probably around 220lbs, that was just less then 2 years ago. Now, I had to do something. So I started being a veg 8 days ago, but the day I decided I will loose weight is today. Today is also the day, I brought out my weight and started my exercise routine. You see I walk fast for about 40-60mins a day, but that is just not enough to raise my metabolism. So I decided to start lifting light weights and eating better.I am going to keep a journal of what I eat each day, how much, and how much I exercised, if at all. And, I will try to weigh my self every Sunday to see how I am doing. I will also try to share recipes, and how I came up to a Fresh and Green diet. Vegetarian diets, hindu style, meaning you can eat dairly, but no eggs, and no fish are by nature green. They are good for the environment as they consume less then 10x the energy that meat based diets do. I will try to get the exact source of this research, I heard that in a vegetarian cooking/life style club years ago. I am not going to count calories folks, just journal about what I eat, I always know if it is too much or too little and I have a feeling so do you.

Yes, if you look closely you will see that his permanent teeth have all but come in and the baby teeth are still there. To its credit, one of the baby teeth is very loose and could come out any day now. The other one...not so much. Being the dutiful mother that I am, I have sought out what knowledge there is to be gained...from the Internet, and have come to the conclusion that we'll just leave them be for now. Conventional wisdom seems to indicate that everything will move into place in its appointed time. If there are any dentists who read my blog and feel otherwise, please let me know. Of course, this mommy doesn't relish taking that son to the dentist any time soon -- though I know I should. Seeing as how his 5-year well-child check-up at our pediatrician's office (where he's gone all his life) mostly consisting of said 5 year-old hiding under a chair and screaming like a banshee, can you blame me? (Incidentally, this is the same pediatrician whose own son with autism has to be totally put under anesthesia for dental check-ups.) I have a few other things I have to deal with right now. Like school.
School is still not going terribly well. I get the impression that my son really enjoys school. He comes home happy and relatively mellow. Those are good signs. But apparently he is still not behaving as expected at school at times, which has resulted in several disciplinary incidents and even his having to be restrained by staff. Those are bad signs. Now, let me just say up front that I don't blame the school at all for disciplining my son. We discipline him too in those same circumstances. We just do it differently. And we try to adjust the circumstances so that he does not act out, as we are trying to understand what makes him act out. So now the school is wondering what to do with him. Something needs to be done here, they tell me. I ask them when we can meet to talk and put some things into place. Last week they told me it would happen this week. This week they are telling me it will happen next week. What are we to do in the meantime, I ask. Isn't there some way we could meet earlier so we don't have these same incidents played out day after day for another week? No, they say, we can't meet until next week. And in the meantime he needs to learn that his behavior is not acceptable, they say. Right. Like we haven't been working on that one for the last 5 years!
Again, I'm not trying to criticize the school. I am simply frustrated. You wouldn't throw a kid with no legs in a pool and expect them to just pick up swimming because they are in a pool. Children with autism have difficulty with social behavior. Its one of the key components of their make-up. It is what many autism professionals call a "core deficit". You can't throw a child with autism in a kindergarten class with 25 other kids and one teacher and expect them to just do something that they by nature simply can't do. You give the kid with no legs a kick board and an instructor in tune to that child's needs and sure, you can teach him to swim. So why not put some things in place for the child with autism? Well, if we ever have our meeting we're sure going to try.
Please pray for us as we navigate this road. I worked in public schools for two years and got to see the educator's side. I never dreamed I would have to walk the parent-with-a-special-needs-child side. I want to be sensitive to the fact that there are 24 other "normal" kids in the class that are entitled to an education free of being poked and prodded by their autistic classmate. I get that. I just want my son to have a chance too. A chance to avoid being the weird kid who gets in trouble all the time. Pray that we can figure out a way to make sure he is getting what he needs, without being seen as difficult parents.
Pray for our son's little heart, because he really and truly does not grasp why he gets in trouble all the time. Can you imagine that? Getting yelled at wherever you go and not understanding why? Its so complicated in his mind. He knows that hitting is wrong, but many times what he is doing that may in fact involve hitting to him does not qualify as hitting. He will hit someone in a certain manner and you can call him on it at that very second and he will deny to his grave that he hit that person. He will burst into the most horrible tears because to him it wasn't hitting, it was some other strange form of communication that only he understands -- but he doesn't know that he is the only one that understands it. It is truly bizarre and frustrating and heartbreaking and fascinating and all a part of who he is. This Sunday in church he quite deliberately knocked my coffee cup so that my coffee spilled down my arm and on the floor. And then he just stared at me and at the coffee and was completely and utterly baffled that I should be upset and that what he had done was not in the slightest bit acceptable or amusing. I took him out to the hallway to talk to him and he looked at me like he could not fathom what I was talking about. How could I be mad? I just wanted to hold him and cry at the complete hopelessness of it all. Thank the Lord for the sermon on grace that followed when I returned to the service. His grace is sufficient. That verse was the Rock that I clung to in the year preceding my son's diagnosis. And it is the same one I cling to now in this crazy sea He has seen fit for me to flail in for a while.
Note: Today was the first day in a week of school days that he did not receive some sort of discipline at school. I praise the Lord for that and seek His grace for tomorrow.
Another note: We have nearly completed the 5-hour RDI DVD and are so encouraged. We feel that this intervention would be a great fit for our son -- we just have to come up with the $4000 out-of-pocket to implement it. Good heavens. Makes you wish Sarah Palin actually had a chance at winning. (Okay, so it makes me wish that. Unfortunately, I don't think that's going to happen, but that's just my opinion and that's all I've got to say about that.

Whats David Blaine up to? Oh, just hanging around.
The magician-daredevil proclaimed, m doin all right, after starting his latest endurance challenge Monday - 60 hours hanging upside-down, without a net, above
Wollman Rink in Manhattans Central Park. Kelly Rippa of Regis and Kelly even hung upside down for a segment to interview the daredevil.
Blaine - sounding nasal from sinus pressure - kept smiling while describing the
enormous push of blood that made it feel like his head was about to explode.
As a child, he was intrigued when Harry Houdini dangled from a crane by his ankles
while escaping a straitjacket.
Said Blaine: The legs go pin and needle very fast. Stretches - kind of an
upside-down sit-up - seem to help.
Blaine, 35, is scheduled to exit from his perch at the climax of a live, two-hour
ABC special, David Blaine: Dive of Death, on Wednesday.

Jordan can't help doing the wrong things sometimes.
Yesterday, he got put on the red light of his class's traffic light. No recess Monday. It'll be at least the second time he's had his recess taken away.
I blame his super-outgoing personality, along with being a child. It's not really that big a deal, but I think it's time that he took control of some of his fidgeting when he's away. Since he can do it when he's with me, I know he can do it when he's not.
Shock and dismay accompanied the discovery that his teacher had phoned Mom and Dad to discuss his unwillingness to do things like not rock his chair back and not put his eraser and pencil in his mouth. Several times he's lost his balance in the chair, causing it to fall. He thinks it's funny. It gets him attention.
I see a future where he's the smart kid in class who's a cut-up, a little disruptive but smart enough not to get caught most of the time. I knew a few of those in high school. They were fun. I might have been one. Might have. Okay, I was. Jordan adds super athlete to the mix. I was also a super athlete, but I was into music and growing my hair long at the time, so I wasn't allowed to represent the school in sports.
So it's punishment and correction time for my little boy. I hate it, but he needs to know that I am concerned. Many times when he's goofing off, he misses something important. And while some of his antics are meant to impress his friends and make friends, he needs to learn better methods of friend-making.
Anyone got any advice on teaching such self-awareness issues.

Kylie Harris began singing and playing guitar at 13 years of age. And after releasing two albums and receiving widespread acclaim in her native New Zealand, the accomplished singer, writer and instrumentalist decided to bring her talent to Nashville. First-time listeners and longtime fans alike are drawn in by her honest and soulful delivery, which has drawn comparisons to Emmylou Harris, Shawn Colvin, Linda Ronstadt, Roseanne Cash and the great Patsy Cline.
At 17, Kylie became the youngest-ever winner of the overall Gold Guitar Award. This high-profile win eventually lead to a recording contract with BMG. Her debut album, “Let It Be Love”, was a critical and commercial success, earning her “Country Album of the Year” and the “Rising Star” award at New Zealand’s Music Entertainment Awards. Her second album, “Fancy”, also took top album honors at those same awards two years later. This success and recognition lead her to tour throughout New Zealand and Australia as the opening act for Kenny Rogers, Ricky Skaggs, The Irish Rovers and Charley Pride, whom she also supported here in the states.
In 2001, her musical abilities and personable manner caught the attention of the television network, Great American Country (GAC). They invited her to host her own daily show called “The Edge of Country,” a program that caters to all fans of Americana/Roots music; it also reaches over 42 million homes in North America to this day.

Day 29 - Greening your Laundry - sunshine is the best way to dry your clothes. I also mentioned that my husband probably would not be open to the idea of hanging our clothes outside to dry. How things change in a few days.
On Monday - the same day our power went out - well our dryer broke too... It is still under warranty thank goodness and we are waiting for a repair man to come and have a look at it. Until then those cloth diapers still need to be washed and dried - so by default my husband has no option than to have them drying outside. I set up a nice little area on our front deck (it gets the most sun) and it is not visible from the street - just a visual bonus. My husband was impressed by the set up and announced "Hey, why don't we dry all our clothes outside on a sunny day - they will smell so good and we can save energy. Now that's something for your blog" Sometimes we (wives women) just have to let them think it was their idea while we are already 3 steps ahead. So it was decided drying our clothes outside - weather permitting. Victory for mother earth.
Now let me tell you how impressed I was with drying the diapers in the wonderful sunlight.... words just can't express my amazement.
